I am currently hiring for the following position. If you know of anyone suitable, please encourage them to apply!
Research Associate in the field of information retrieval / user experience (0.5 FTE)
This role is part of a Google-funded research project that aims to use AI (Artificial Intelligence) and data visualization to facilitate more efficient and effective approaches to information retrieval through the development of alternative approaches to search strategy formulation. This has the potential to minimize error and inefficiency in scientific research and facilitate more efficient and effective research workflows for the broader scientific community.
This project is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together concepts and principles from human-computer interaction, natural language processing and information science. You will work with other researchers to develop and evaluate prototypes and to make recommendations for future research and development.
We are seeking a candidate who is excited about transforming the process of evidence synthesis, who understands the importance of transparency and reproducibility in science, and who can thrive in a highly interdisciplinary research environment. You should have a strong background in software development, ideally in a research environment or other area related to rapid prototyping and innovation. You will be working at the interface of many different creative, technological, and academic disciplines, including information retrieval, data visualization, natural language processing and interaction design.
Main duties:
- Rapid prototyping using an agile approach informed by stakeholder feedback
- Software development in front end technologies primarily using VueJS, HTML, CSS, and Mongo, whilst implementing the latest best practices
- Experience with version management, software testing, DevOps and CI workflows
- Ideation and exploration of new ideas and approaches to structured searching and information retrieval

Tony – Im very interested in this research opportunity but not a CSS or Mongo or HTML developer. Perhaps there is a way I could still get on the team? Other than that requirement, I am strong in the others.
Hi Craig, thanks for getting in touch, delighted to hear of your interest. May I suggest that you apply anyway, to get the dialog going and to help us understand your background & interests?
Will do
Im going to take a few days to put together an additional document, beyond the traditional resume and cover letter, which should help to better communicate my strength of fitness in the various essential and desirable criteria. Try to get it to you in ~ 48 hours.
Hi Tony, I am not from the UK but still interested in the position. Are you only looking for people that live in or want to move to the UK? Or is working remotely also an option?
Thanks Tom. I think some remote working is certainly an option. I’m not sure wholly remote would be ideal, but not ruling it out at this stage
