Not sure if I mentioned this before (I probably did in the last issue of Informer), but on April 1st next year Mike Taylor, Udo Kruschwitz and I will be organising an Industry Day at ECIR 2010. This event is similar in spirit to the Industry Track at SIGIR (which this year was chaired by my ex-Endeca colleague Daniel Tunkelang), but with a more European focus. The venue is the Open University campus in Milton Keynes, UK.
In common with previous IRSG Industry Days, we aim to present a topical selection of talks, panels and case studies from the world of search and information access, with the emphasis on content drawn from the IR practitioner community.
We won’t be issuing a “call for papers” as such, as this is essentially a ‘by-invitation’ event. However, if there are individuals or organisations out there who’d like to get involved (e.g. as panellists or speakers) and have an interesting case study or demo to present, then drop me a note either here or offline.
As in previous years, we aim to present a topical selection of the latest innovations in search and information access, whilst maintaining the collegiate spirit of what we like to think of as a community event. (As an example have a look at last year’s programme: http://irsg.bcs.org/SearchSolutions/2008/sse2008.php ).
We won’t be issuing a “call for papers” as such, but if there are folks out there who’d like to get involved (e.g. as panellists or speakers) and have an interesting case study or demo to present, then drop us a line at the address below.
Great to hear that you guys are doing this! I’ve only attended one ECIR, but it was so memorable that I had to start a blog ( http://thenoisychannel.com/2008/04/06/nick-belkin-at-ecir-08/ ) in order to blog about it!
I’m obviously biased, but I think the SIGIR Industry Day was a huge success — in fact, it may have been *too* successful ( http://technocalifornia.blogspot.com/2009/08/umap-and-sigir-09.html ). In general, I feel it’s important that IR researchers and practitioners reach across the aisle to learn from one another.
I wish you luck with organizing the event, especially considering that you are holding it on April Fools’ Day!
Thank you for your kind words of support Daniel – if we can run an event half as popular (and credible) as yours we’ll be very happy indeed!
Interesting to see the consequences of that success – FWIW our event will take place on a separate day, immediately after the main conference. So my main concern at this stage is putting together a strong enough programme too persuade sufficient numbers of folks to stay on for longer than perhaps they’d originally intended to. Will definitely be checking out the detail of your blog posts to see if we can pick up some tips in achieving that 🙂
Cheers,
Tony
Dear Tony,
I am founder of a small start-up in Cambridge (Deep Visuals Limited) which has emerged from the ashes of Kodak European Research, where I was Director, which closed at the end of June 2009.
We are currently working on projects for Kodak in the US based around end-user engagement with digital photo collections. Confidentiality prevents me from offering a demo of this at your industry day, but I am very interested in attending.
I have worked previously with Udo Kruschwitz and have had a number of interactions with Stefan Reuger.
Your note says the day is “by invitation only” – can I have an invite please ?
Thanks,
Alan.
Hi Alan,
Apologies, guess I wasn’t clear in my post – what I meant is that the programme is essentially by inviation (hence no CfP). But the event itself is quite open – in fact we’ll be publcising the programme and registration details shortly. So we’d be delighted to have you join us, either as a delegate or speaker (we have 1 slot still available).
Best regards,
Tony
